If it isn’t just sitting quietly with our eyes closed and our minds empty, then what is it?
Keeping your mind in the present moment, while being in a relaxed state.
It is that simple.
Therefore, some people can enter a meditative state doing many different things. Such as sweeping the floor or washing dishes.
Relaxed State & Present Moment
There are 2 key parts there. Relaxed state and Present Moment.
I may be in the present moment when I am helping my child with Common Core Math, but I am not in a relaxed state!
If I am watching a TV show I may be in a relaxed state, but my mind is not in the present moment.
When I first started meditating if I just sat still and quiet and tried to be in the present moment, it was tricky. My mind wandered so quickly. I lost focus in about 20 seconds. Then it was turned into thinking with my eyes closed.
Focusing on your breath can help you learn to return to the present moment.
Adding words to focus on can help give your mind something to focus on and stay present.
For me it was adding the movement that helped me bump up the length of time I could meditate! Tomorrow I will teach you an easy way to add movement.
Today it is breathing and words, which you are already great at!
Breathe in Peace & Calm
Pause (2,3,4)
Breathe out and Smile
Pause (2,3,4)
Pause and notice: Do you feel relaxed?
Now do it again and notice your body and intentionally relax your body parts. Relax your body as you breathe out. Let the breathing and words help you stay in the present moment.
Repeat this a few times notice how long you can focus on your breathing and words and stay relaxed and present.
There is no right or wrong, just try!
